My LLBean pricey flannel sheets turned into flannel threads after 4 washes (according to care instructions). However, my flannel sheets (cheapo) from Amazon are still going after three years. *** LL Bean.

Bought a jacket for my wife at the NJ store. It was not to her taste and so I went back to return it.

They did not accept it even though tags were still on it. To make things worse, the staff were both incompetent as well as unkind and insisted that the returns policy did not cover the item because it had been on sale. A lot of drivel.

Will never purchase from them again. And yes my wife was right - the jacket was ugly, just like the customer service.

I had a simular expirience with the store in Maine. They refused to take my kid's jacketback after he said he was freezing in it.

Just two weeks and had receipt and everything. So much for the returns policy.

We got him a way better jacket at Target. Bean's clothes and policies are crap.

On Facebook I see LL Bean's posts in my feed. Recently when I have been checking out their posts, I can't tell you how many times I have noticed someone has an issue with returning an item and posted a comment.

I was OK with them restricting the returns to a year with the receipt but many individuals were commenting even within a year and with a receipt the item was still not accepted.

Paying a premium price for a crappier return policy than most discount stores? Are you kidding me?

Deteriorating quality and awful customer care

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I bought a down coat for my wife in spring, 2020. It wasn't the prettiest thing, but she gets very cold and the coat seemed warm enough.

After a couple of wears, the thing starts to molt. Feathers and down everywhere, coming out of the seams. Just ridiculous considering this is a $300 item. So, we decided to return it and buy a coat from a better company.

LL Bean would not take it back, though, because it was worn. The idiot I spoke with at the Freeport store told me she was "aware of quality issues with this item", but would not accept it back because it was worn. She even noted that "yes, there are feathers everywhere". So we are out $300 and tax and had an awful customer service experience to boot.

They lied about their returns policy. I will never shop here again - what a bunch of thieves.

Same situation here. My new and $$$ Bean parka tore and ripped when I opened the door to my truck.

Feathers everywhere. That is just how *** these products are made now. Had a dumb conversation with the idiots at the store and topped it off with a dumber conversation with idiots at Corporate. I am out $300.

Bought a better quality one at Costco for $60 - at least Costco is honorable, so they will get our business. As for Bean, you cannot return the crap to Bean because they lie about their bogus returns policy. Hey Bean - how about you make products that last longer than a week and then you won't have an issue with returns - or, customers like me who will forever be former customers? We used to shop here all the time.

Now we give the finger when we drive past the store. You give those of us who live in Maine a bad name.

Guest

Same deal here with my parka which ripped when I opened the door to my truck. Quality is nil.

Just falling apart. This thing wasn't cheap, either. I had a dumb conversation with an idiot in the store. Then I called the corporate people and had an even dumber conversation.

Bottom line is I have a parka they will not take back and lost $300 and an hour of my time.

My wife is sewing the seams of the parka and I bought a much sturdier and better quality one at Costco for 80% less than the crap from the Bean. We used to shop here all the time but will never shop here again.

Guest

I wish a good law firm would begin a class action claim against LL Bean. I had the same experience as you did.

They refused the return on my husband's down coat, which was $$ in part I paid it because I thought the company had quality products and would stand behind them. They pretty much harassed us when we tried to return the coat (yes, it was within the year, and the coat which was just covered with down) and did not stand up to the care instructions. I would take part in a class action lawsuit just because this company is a fraud and also arrogant and clearly does not sell quality products.

We do not buy new coats every few months - is that what these clothes are designed for? it is the very last time we ever do business with them.

LLBEAN = Fraudulent company

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I gained weight and needed a new coat and because of COVID I did not want to shop in store for a raincoat. A co-worker told me LLBean sold good mens raincoats.

So, I bought one off their website thinking I could always return it if it didnt work out. They say they have a one year returns policy for items. The coat was pricey and not very attractive but it seemed alright. The second time I wore it the zipper stuck and would not come unstuck and I had to pull the damn thing off over my head.

I called Bean and arranged to return it. Sent it back at my own cost. Heard nothing for months. Finally I called them and was told they would not take the return, just like the other people who complained on this site, they say its because I wore the coat.

How appalling. They say it is an exception because if you wear the item it is not returnable. Now how is that standing behind your product?

That was my first and last purchase on LLBean and I am going to call the Maine Attorney General and complain and the Better Business Bureau too. Awful company and fraudulent.

LL Bean's Facebook page regularly has customers complaining that an item they purchased a short time ago and have the receipt is not being accepted. One comment I remember off the top of my head was one individual who bought hiking shoes, didn't like them after three months, and returned them. Only to have the return refused for "wear and tear." Paying a premium price for a crappier return policy than most discount stores is ridiculous.

I worked at one of the Bean stores and advise you to shop somewhere reputable, such as Costco. Bean is one of those places like so many nowadays that pretends to be honorable but they are most definitely not.

They are in it for the profit only. The upper management is very corrupt.

Take it from a former insider. I work at Costco now and they actually do give a damn about living up to their ethos.

This company sucks

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Very disappointed with the Bean. I liked them for so many years, but they have really gone downhill.

I even worked at one of their stores some time ago. Now they dont make quality clothes. The sizing in mens clothes is off, so you can get one pair of pants that is the same size as another but neither has the same measurements. The zippers never work.

And now they dont take returns. I just discovered Marmot and like them a whole lot more.

Too bad as I prefer buying American - but then again, the clothes arent made in the USA. I strongly encourage everyone to boycott this really *** company.

I agree wholeheartedly. I bought a men's vest a few weeks ago that fell apart after one wearing and one washing (I follow the care instructions to avoid my wife's wrath).

What a piece of junk. It was about $75 with tax so I just threw out $75.because I know the Returns is a total sham. I will not shop here again.

Another thing...I liked the vest but my boss at work told me it was the absolutely ugliest piece of clothing he had ever seen and laughed. He was right it was not attractive but *** it was warm and I work in a machine shop.

Guest

My wife bought me a pair of men's gloves from the Bean. Very pricey, and supposed to be warm and waterproof.

She has great taste but these gloves were neither warm nor waterproof. I sent them back six weeks ago and have yet to hear from the Returns Dept. If I don't hear from them I will call the Maine Attorney General (we live in Maine). I am so sick of these companies taking advantage of people.

Someone on this forum wrote of a class action lawsuit against Bean.

It is a good idea. So would changing the upper management as they clearly are producing overpriced items and trying to trick people about quality.

Guest

I want to thank you all for posting this. I never bought anything here before, but was going to buy a very expensive winter parka at Bean.

I asked at work where I could get the best warm coat since I work in construction outdoors. I heard nothing good about this company from my co-workers and my Facebook page so I did some online searching and see it is a bad company. Thank you for steering me away. I just bought a coat at Costco instead.

It is warm and looks good and well priced. At least Costco is honest and doesn't lie to customers.

Guest

Not only do the products suck but customer service sucks. Called to ask about a return of poorly made men's coat I sent a few weeks ago via UPS and wow - sounds like I got a surrogate for the Trump campaign.

Hostile, ignorant, angry and totally incompetent. Will not buy anythign from them again.

Guest

Yes and they have the ugliest clothes here too! Kind of a joke to wear stuff so ugly like ugly Xmas sweaters

Guest

We had similar experience with the NJ store. I got two shirts from their website and both were same size but one was huge on me so I went to return store near my work and they did not take it back.

It was new, just too big. I had receipt and all. Clerk not nice not professional said she did not accept because she was told not to take a return.

I do not understand. I will not shop here agen.

The most annoying TV commercials ever.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

The LL Bean TV commercials that depict two couples competing in a canoe race are the most annoying commercials on TV. The screaming that goes on are to attract attention to the tv screen which is a disgraceful and disturbing marketing practice.

Yass! Ugly company with ugly values (promotes hunting and fishing - it’s not the Middle Ages, folks, and there’s no need to be cruel to animals), awful CEO, and really ugly clothes.

Hunters and fishers are dirtbags and so is LLBean. My sister worked at the store in ME and told me all sorts of things about how they "recycle" returns (that is, sell them as new) but also deny all kinds of returns, too.

She said whether they are honorable or not is arbitrary and really depends on whether the store manager is in a good mood that day. Anyway, don't buy from anyplace that supports fishing and hunting it is awful and there are good companies out there that care about the planet and animal welfare.

I went to buy a Father's Day gift at the Bean in Maine. Online, the customer service at LLBean sucks.

No doubt about it. Seems it's gotten even worse int he store. I needed help getting my dad some sweaters in his size and I waited, and waited and waited after asking for help. Eventually after 15 minutes passed, I walked out after watching a bunch of employees taking selfies and chatting about what their plans were for the weekend.

Ummmm....went to Costco instead and got him some fantastic clothes at a much more accurate (e.g. not inflated) price.

No more Bean for me. What a *** company it has become.

We are in the same basket. Loafers from Bean fell apart after a couple of wears.

They would not take them back, even though it was within the year (per their returns policy), and we had the paperwork (receipt). The bottom of the shoe peeled from the uppers on the R shoe so much you could see my foot and that should not happen within 9 months. These are not cheap items. Very disappointed that they are not honoring their own returns policy.

I even pointed to the website where the 1 year returns policy is listed and was told "it is up to our discretion" whether or not to take an item. The person I spoke with was really rude, too.

We are also formed customers now. We will never purchase here again.

Guest

I bought a flannel shirt for my partner. It looked warm and I thought he would like it.

It did not fit, was two sizes two big for him even tho' his usual size. The clothes run big at Bean. And it was not flattering on him and made him look like a lumberjack, too. Nice on the hanger at the store but on him - really ugly.

He tried it on but just for size and to humor me. So I went to return it. Tags and everything on it. Receipt too.

They did not take it back. Made the trip back in a week.

Said it was not returnable because he tried it on. What the ***

Guest

I had the same experience with some sneakers that had a sole peel off. They online returns dept would not accept the return 'tho the shoes were just three months old.

Because they were worn. Yes, that is why I buy sneakers, to wear them. They got that much right.

But I did not expect to pay such a high price for such pieces of *** have these fall apart right away, and then be treated so poorly So much for the lie (I mean, the warranty). Will never shop there again.

Me too. I knew from Facebook that this company had a *** reputation but that it didn't used to.

I fish, and I saw waders that I thought would be good for me and my son. Of course they leaked first time out. Very *** quality. Just like everyone else on this post, I tried to return them and the company did not take them back as a return.

They had all kinds of really nonsensical reasons for it like "did you put them on right"? And "how do we know they leaked"? And yes, they were very nasty about it. I should have known better.

Cabelas sells much better products.

I will never ever shop the Bean again. What a *** company.

Guest

The funny thing in your review is that my wife worked for LL Bean and they re-cycle returns and resell them. Maybe they got in trouble for this?

Because it doesn’t seem they honor their returns policy anymore. Also my wife said it sucked to work for this company they are awful to customers.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1920295

I worked at Bean, too and yes, I agree that they recycle returns and have stopped honoring their policy. I think they might be afraid of being sued because of Covid and also because they do not represent their policy in an honorable way. I work at Target now and am very glad I left Bean as it is not an ethical company.

Guest

Me too. Had bought houseslippers (mocs) for my dad but they were too big (he also said they were ugly LOL!).

I am sharing cuz Bean did not accept the return because the shoes were "tried on" (yes, that is true, for about 30 seconds, dad slipped them on then slipped them off). Even with original packaging, no wear on the item, and receipt, they did not take the slippers back. And yes they were rude about it, too. Kept saying the items were not returnable as he tried them on.

What on earth? So the argument is not to buy gifts here with a person who isn;t here to try them on? We will never support such a shady company ever again.

Who runs this awful operation? I did figure out how to recycle the mocs, though - gave them to a clothing donation drop off.

The Bean has really deteriorated

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We used to love this company. Once even had a business account here. Great products and customer service, until about two years ago. What happened? Did they get a *** new CEO? What gives? Products are cheap, clothes are just plain old ugly &;;;;;;; frumpy, they wont accept returns and honor their own policy....so we are no longer purchasing from them. Straw that broke the camels back is that they did not accept a pricey pair of mens shoes for return that were too small and only worn inside. I agree with you and hope an attorney will read this. What they do is to overprice items by 300 - 400%.

Then they advertise "free" shipping and "generous" returns. But, their shipping is paid for when you pay for your overpriced item, and so is the "generous" return policy. They don't even honor their own policies. Lots of fraud going on here.

Ask me how I know - it's cuz I once worked there. A smart lawgroup should refile a lawsuit.

Return policy retroactively changed.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I purchased a sleeping bag years ago before they changed their return policy to one year. Prior to five years ago if you sent any item you purchased from them they would quickly exchange it for you at any time. Every purchase made before this new policy was reliant upon the old lifetime warranty but they now refuse to honor it anyways stating that I now need to have the original receipt. They may be their new return policy but since they never previously required a receipt, everyone, including myself did not bother to save them. So they are refusing to send an exchange for my return in their belief they can retroactively change a policy that was the basis for making the purchase in the first place. This is called "breach of contract". They are using every excuse under the sun to not accept returns anymore because their new CEO hates all returns and does not care about customer satisfaction anymore. This will be the end of this once great company.

Your Visa charge was excellent. The Mastercard is horrible. I am accused of charging $500 for items I didnt receive. I have questioned this since Sept. 2019. I have not received any satisfaction. I’mtold that the items were sent to my home address. I didn't order them nor did I receive them. You have some very rude individuals in the fraud dept. I was told I had to pay. I have been doing business with llbean for 20 years and paid my full balance when received. There are charges in Sept and Oct, of 2019 and Jan. and Feb. 2020. I DID NOT MAKE! 100% agree. Visa card was excellent.

Mastercard (Citbank) has frequent fraud suspicions (o.k.), but does not notify the customer by email or phone when they put a hold/block on the card! They send a letter! So, the only way to find out your card has been blocked is when you go to purchase something and the card is declined and you're stuck somewhere unable to purchase what you needed. If they would contact the customer via modern-day contact (not snail mail), the customer (who would have to give proper identifying info) could clear up the issue and get the card unlocked.

We had ZERO problems with Visa over the course of 3-4 years, and we've had 4 problems with Citibank (mastercard) in the course of 1 year.

Citibank says they refuse to change their fraud communication system. LLBean––we'd like to stick with your card (and we spend a lot of $$ each year using the card), but you're going to make us change, if you can't negotiate with Citibank to resolve this issue.

My dad had the same experience. He bought a raincoat that was pricey but he commutes in to Chicago every day for work so he thought it would be a good idea to get a good raincoat.

He gets this coat at the store in Skokie, IL and he told me they promised him the raincoat was waterproof and that he could return it if it was not. Turns out the coat was a joke - not waterproof at all (my dad said his slicker from Target was way more waterproof). So he goes to return it and he tells me they yelled at him and told him he would not be able to return his coat and in essence "didn't know what he was doing" and that is why the coat didn't work. Whaa??

Yelling at someone because your product was inferior? Lying about the returns policy?

One reason that I make a lot of returns at LLBean is because sizing is completely inconsistent. I wear a Tall XL in most lines of clothing.

Sometimes I am a M or an XXL at LLBean. Sometimes the talls fit me like a regular. I don't get this company.

It's like they want you to become a customer on their blacklist. I don't shop here any more.

I am a blacklisted customer for just the reason you cite PLUS the terrible quality zippers they use that just fall apart after a couple of wears. If they are upset about the returns they could 1.

try to make sizing consistent, 2.

use better quality in their items, especially zippers, 3. stop being *** Then a lot more of us would shop the Bean.

The sizing is really terrible at the Bean. I used to buy my clothes here but because you sometimes need to try multiple sizes off (one item can be huge, the next item in the same exact size can be too small), you wind up with a lot of returns.

As others have shared, the returns dept are idiots. They say you are abusing the policy when you send stuff back. Guess what? That is your own doing, because of sizing and quality.

How about taking some responsibility and being more accurate and honest with your customers?

I have not bought anything here for months and never will again. They deserve to go out of business and probably will.

I bought a bathing suit from the Bean a few months ago, in Feb. I wore it once.

It started to discolor and it bled. It looked bleached when I took it off. I had not worn it but for two hours and I did not go swimming in a chlorinated pool. The suit It was not cheap but I guess it was cheaply made.

So I tried to return it. They refused and said I couldnt because I had worn it. The website says they will take defective items for up to a year. Thats why I was alright paying them overpriced $$$ for the suit.

I had a similar experience with a pair of corduroy trousers. I wore them to work and by lunchtime the zipper stuck and broke.

They were expensive pants and I bought them because I thought LLBean stood behind their products. Very cheaply made zipper. I took them back to a local store within a week of purchase to return or exchange for a pair with a working zipper, and received the most unprofessional diatribe from a clerk I have ever experienced. Asked to speak to the manager and received an even more unprofessional response.

They did not honor my return even with a receipt and an obviously defective zipper. Basically they don't stand behind their returns policy. I am a senior and have had my own small business for 50 years.

I would never, ever treat customers this way. They have lost a customer.
